When asked what games stuck out to them during their seasons, Central Men’s and Women’s head soccer coaches, Garry Laidlaw and Mike Kobylinski, respectively, pointed out a couple games that were really turning points in their seasons. For the men’s side, it was a trip to Nebraska Wesleyan that got the ball rolling in the right direction towards the end of the season.
“We had been struggling to create and score goals from open play all season long,” Laidlaw said. “Even though we were happy with a lot of the phases of the game, if you don’t put the ball in the back of the net in soccer, you’re going to be in trouble. In that game, we twice came from behind to equalize, and I think both goals were from the run of play. I think that gave us a little bit of confidence that we can create and we can score, and I think that really lifted us a little bit.”
Coach Laidlaw also points out the regular season finale against Coe, which saw his Dutch team win 6 – 0, was also a point of pride for his Central men’s soccer team. On the women’s side, Coach Kobylinski mentioned the first victory of a school-record six-in-a-row as the table setter for his team’s season.
“I think when we played Monmouth at the beginning of the season and then we went on a six-game winning streak, which was a school record for us, we really got into a good rhythm,” Kobylinski said. “We were scoring a lot of goals in that time, and I think that just kind of carried over through the conference.”
The men made it to the finals of the Iowa Conference tournament for the first time in school history, while the women advanced as far as the semifinals. However, both teams would see their seasons end at the hands of Loras College.
