Some Marion County students headed to Des Moines over the weekend for a competition working with Legos for the First Lego League. Teams of kids along with an adult coach compete to use automatic Lego robots to complete a series of predetermined task on a table. The task fit a new theme each year that encourages kids to look at real world problems. The theme this year was senior solutions, which showed kids some of the difficulties of aging. 8 kids from Pella Community Schools’ Team Mustached Squid Chasers competed at the Science Center in Des Moines. Some Knoxville students were there as well. Dan Fay, coordinator of the Knoxville Lego team said that the team had a great time at the event, and that the learning opportunities available were awesome.

Pella Team Members:

Caitlyn Fank, Garrett Johnson, Gavin Klein, Isaiah Martin, Elizabeth Sales, Adam Smart, Christian Williams, and Austin Adrian.  Coaches were Pella Community School teacher Mary Klein and Pella Corporation engineer, Nick Koren.  They were sponsored by PEERS (Partnership for Engineering Educational Resources for Schools)

Here are some photos of both teams from the event.
