The highly touted Oskaloosa girls’ basketball team came out with a win, while the Little Dutch won big over the Indians in the night cap, as the two schools split in the Little Hawkeye Conference matchup. The Lady Dutch came out firing against the Indians, opening up an 8 – 2 lead within the first three minutes of the game. Pella High head girls’ coach, Jerod Garland, said that his girls playing a physical style of basketball early was the key in getting out to such a hot start. Oskaloosa would finish the quarter, however, on a 16 – 3 run, and Pella would only get as close as five points the rest of the game, and drop the contest 55 – 36. The Little Dutch had little trouble with Oskaloosa, handling them 66 – 41. The Indians’ boys were settling for several perimeter shots, due to the good post defense by Pella, who finished the first half with a lead of 41 – 20. Jordan Pingel stepped up his game, scoring 12 points and even at 5’7”, grabbed seven rebounds to fuel his team to a 4 – 0 start this season. Head coach, Mark Core, said after a shaky first few games of the season from Pingel, he’s beginning to have poise on the court, which can be attributed to the “team” atmosphere that Core has built this year. Both teams will have an entire week off before going on the road again to face future Little Hawkeye Conference member, Dallas Center-Grimes this Friday.
