Pella Christian Girls Preparing for State Finals Rematch

December 22 has probably been circled on the calendar since March for Pella Christian head girls’ basketball coach, Kevin Van Maanen. Tomorrow night, his Eagles will make the long road trip to Sioux Center and Dordt College, as number one ranked Western Christian plays number 11 Pella Christian in a rematch of the girls’ Class 2A state final game. The Eagles are 6 – 0 on the season, and last played exactly one week ago in a 45 – 34 win over Newton. The game was sloppy at times, and the Eagles lost some players to foul trouble and had to rely on their young bench to close the game out. Coach Van Maanen told KNIA/KRLS Sports that his team had a lot to work on between Newton and Western Christian on Saturday, and most importantly, was getting back to 100 percent.
“We’ve got to get healthy,” Van Maanen said. “That’s number one for us, to get our legs back and our energy back. We’ve got to keep rebounding the ball better, play better defense; it seems like the pressure bothers us at times. We didn’t get girls in proper spots to handle pressure to break the press, so we’ve got to cover that again. I know Western’s going to come after us, so we’ve just got to do a better job with that.”
Both the Eagles’ boys’ and girls’ varsity teams will make the trip to Dordt College. The girls will tip-off at 1:30 p.m., while the boys are scheduled to start at 6:45, but if games move swiftly, then the start time will move up. Both games will be streamed live on kniakrls.com.
