Marion County Public Health has more information for anyone still considering getting the flu vaccine. Nurse Judi Van Hulzen tells KNIA/KRLS that though the vaccine offers protection from serious illness that causes hospitalizations or death, it’s still cannot be guaranteed to prevent all symptoms of the flu. The efficiency of the vaccine can vary by patient’s age, health, and previous history. The elderly and those who are already sick are still susceptible to some symptoms; Van Hulzen says among those most vulnerable, the vaccine still has a 40-60% protection rate from any symptoms and 70-80% from death. She adds that overall, the vaccine is the best tool we have to prevent influenza and recommends everyone get it, especially children, the elderly, and the sick.
