The Pella High boys’ basketball team would love to ring in 2013 with a pair of wins in back-to-back games, but they’ll have two tough opponents to go through this Friday and Saturday who look to play spoilers to the Little Dutch’s festivities. Both Pella and Pella Christian have exploded off the starting blocks this season with records of 5 – 1 and 5 – 2, respectively, but have had a lot to work on in practices during the lull period that is more affectionately known as Christmas break. The Little Dutch are looking at taking better shots and making more of them, while the Eagles are trying to communicate more and play a more physical style than what they have shown. Pella High head basketball coach, Mark Core is not writing either of these games off for this weekend, and said that if they can salvage a victory against Pella Christian, it really doesn’t get much easier.
“If we’re fortunate enough to get a ‘W’ (at Pella Christian), then we turn around and play a very, very good PCM team,” Core said. “I’ve seen both of these teams on tape, and they’re both scary good. We’re going to have to do everything right to have a chance against both of those teams that first weekend back.”
Meanwhile, the Mustangs of PCM haven’t been slouches, getting off to a 9 – 0 record and getting back some key players from injury; mainly, Nate VandeWall, who was injured during a game late in the football season. The Pella boys will be facing them Saturday evening, aired live on 92.1 KRLS.
