The Central Women’s basketball team just couldn’t keep up with Loras on Saturday afternoon, falling 65 – 49. The women were down by ten at the half and trailed by as much as 24 in the final 20 minutes. The Dutch made a run at it, getting to within 11 with about six minutes left in the game, but couldn’t get any closer. Central was surprisingly out-rebounded 38 – 23, which is just about half as many boards as they grab on average per game. Kalli Richardson had 17 points to lead all scorers and Bry Pierce threw in ten off the bench. The men had a back-and-forth style game, and the Dutch had to survive a last second shot from long distance to tiptoe out of Dubuque with a 79 – 77 win. The Central men had an eight point lead in the first half, but as they’ve been known to do this season, gave that up to Loras, who went on a 24 – 8 run to close the first half. The Duhawks’ lead grew to 12, but Central stormed back to take a five point lead late and held on in the final seconds for the victory. Five players were in double figures for Central, led by Matt Greenfield’s 16 points. Central’s women’s record falls to 8 – 8 and are 1 – 4 in the Iowa Conference, while the men improve to 9 – 6 and 2 – 3 in conference play. The Dutch have a short turnaround, staying at home this evening to play rival Buena Vista.
