Ice has formed over Lake Red Rock and many people will begin ice fishing soon. Ken Kenyon, Conservation Officer, says that there are some simple tips to stay safe while out on the ice. He says to drill holes to check the ice thickness. 4 inches of ice is safe for a person, 5 for ATV’s or snowmobiles, and 8 to 12 inches is safe for small cars and trucks. He cautions ice fishers about the stability of the ice on the main body of the lake, saying that with such a large area open water can form throughout winter. He says the bodies of water surrounding the lake generally have more stable ice.
