Pella Christian Sweeps Oskaloosa to Maintain Conference Leads

The Pella Christian girls and boys earned a sweep at Oskaloosa last night as the girls earned a hard fought 49-43 win and the boys ran away winning 68-42. The girls’ game featured two ranked teams battling for the conference lead and didn’t disappoint anyone. Cori Uitermarkt dominated the first half scoring 14 points inside but was held to just two in the second half. Once again, it was the outside shooting of Paige Engbers and Lauren Jungling that made the difference in the end as the two combined for five second half three pointers. Coach Kevin Van Maanen said he was proud of how the girls stayed mentally tough all game long. Engbers led all scorers with 18 points, Uitermarkt finished with 16 and Jora Vanderhart added a season high 11 points as Pella Christian improved to 12-3 and now owns the top spot in the LHC at 7-1. In the boys’ game, Pella Christian held just a nine point halftime lead and had to fight through foul trouble. The Eagles came out re-energized in the second half playing more of their style of fast-paced basketball and gradually pulled away for the big win. Austin Vermeer scored 23 points, 16 of which were in the second half, Jared Van Wyk added 12 and Sebastian Baugh scored ten. Pella Christian improved to 12-4 on the season and maintained their half-game lead over Grinnell in the LHC race at 7-1. The girls host Eddyville-Blakesburg this afternoon, and then both teams travel across town to face Pella Tuesday night.
