It was the Lady Dutch prevailing in overtime, while the Tigers’ boys easily handled the Little Dutch, as the two teams split the hardwood doubleheader Friday evening. The girls’ game featured several lead changes and some exciting moments down the stretch. Grinnell had a 55 – 53 lead with around two minutes to play, but some key defensive stops by the Pella girls and some costly turnovers on both sides only allowed Pella to tie the game at 55 to send it into overtime. The Lady Dutch would outscore the Tigers 10 – 6 in the extra four minutes to come out with a 65 – 61 win. Coach Jerod Garland said that their much-improved rebounding may have been the biggest key to victory last night. The Pella boys had no answer for Joe Schmidt, Eli Dunne, or Joe Nowasell down low, as they were defeated 70 – 54. The Tigers’ trio combined for 57 points, led by Schmidt’s 24. The biggest stat of the night was turnovers; Pella gave the ball away 16 times to Grinnell’s three. Isaac Naaktgeboren had 13 and Nathan Clayberg had a career-high 12. The Lady Dutch improved to 7 – 9 overall and evened their Little Hawkeye Conference record at 4 – 4, while the Little Dutch fell to 10 – 5 on the year and 5 – 3 in conference play. Next up is a rematch at home with rival Pella Christian on Tuesday, which is the annual Coaches vs. Cancer game for the two schools.
