Possible Farm Bill Extenstion in the Works

When the US Senate agreed to pass a fiscal cliff bill early this morning, they also agreed to extend the 2008 Farm Bill for a year. Such an agreement would prevent the United States from reverting to 1949 policies that could, among other things, double the price of milk. The House is set to vote on the bill sometime today.

Marion County FSA Director Angie Vos tells KNIA/KRLS that they continue to wait on official word and will discuss with KNIA/KRLS what an extension of the Farm Bill would mean if it becomes official. One thing Vos did say was that an extension would mean signup could begin for the Direct and Counter-Cyclical Program.

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley and Democratic Senator Tom Harkin were among the eight senators who voted against the fiscal cliff measure.
