Injuries plagued the Pella Christian girls’ basketball team and the boys rolled Saturday against non-conference rival Colo-Nesco. The girls were without Lauren Jungling and Madison Fopma again, and it didn’t help that Cori Uitermarkt had an uncharacteristically bad night, in a 57 – 49 loss to the number nine team in Class 1A. Paige Engbers carried the team on her back with 26 points, and Tessa Howerzyl contributed eight points. Coach Kevin Van Maanen told KNIA/KRLS Sports that Hannah Beltman has been seeing a lot of playing time and that is only a good thing for his squad to potentially have that seventh person come off the bench for him. The boys took a 50 – 15 lead into the half of their game, and made short work of Colo-Nesco, 77 – 45. Austin Ver Meer scored all 24 of his points in the first half, and Sebastian Baugh was also a force with 17 of his own. The Eagles’ girls fall to 14 – 5 on the season, the boys are 15 – 4 and on a nine-game winning streak, and a trip to Knoxville is next for them both on Tuesday.
