Pella Christian’s girls’ basketball team had little trouble dismantling Van Buren on Tuesday night, winning 51 – 33 and advancing to the next round in the Class 2A regional tournament. The Eagles forced 23 Warriors turnovers on the night and took advantage of several of them, including a big steal from Tessa Howerzyl, who broke away and scored a lay-up with her team’s lead cut to four at the time. Coach Kevin Van Maanen said that there wasn’t just one player that stepped up last night; it was the whole team. Howerzyl finished with 15, as did Cori Uitermarkt, and Paige Engbers added 12 for the now 17 – 5 Pella Christian girls. A trip to New Sharon is on deck for the Eagles, who will face North Mahaska in the semifinals of their regional bracket on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.; a game that will be aired live on 92.1 KRLS.
