Despite making just one field goal in the entire second half, the Pella Christian girls’ basketball team held on to defeat North Mahaska on Friday night, 48 – 41 and will advance to the Class 2A regional final this Monday. The Eagles used strong defense and smart passing to jump out to a 14 point lead, before Paige Engbers swished a buzzer-beating three to fuel her team to a 17-point halftime advantage. The Warhawks came out and did what they had to in the second half, preventing the ball from getting anywhere near Cori Uitermarkt and were aggressive on defense. Unfortunately for North Mahaska, the aggression led to fouls, and the Eagles got the job done at the line to seal the game late. Engbers led all scorers with 19, Cori Uitermarkt had 14 for the now 18 – 5 Eagles, and they will play Woodward-Granger on Monday night in Pleasantville, with the winner advancing to the state tournament in Des Moines.
