The combination of Hali and younger sister Tori VanVelzen proved to be too much for the Pella High girls’ basketball team to handle, as Norwalk defeated the Lady Dutch, 47 – 41 in the opening round of the Class 4A regional tournament. Pella got out to an 8 – 6 lead early, but quickly fell behind in the second quarter and would never regain the lead. A bulls-eye from beyond the arc from senior Morgan Ernst cut the lead to one late in the fourth quarter, but Norwalk shut the door on any hope of a comeback by coming up with big defensive stops down the stretch. Coach Jerod Garland said he was very proud of the relentlessness of his girls all season long. The VanVelzen sisters combined for 28 points for the Warriors, while Mackenzie Gustafson led the way for Pella with 13 points, and senior Allie DeMuelenaere dumped in 12. Norwalk faces Winterset this Saturday, while the loss ends the season for the Lady Dutch at 9 – 13.
