Central College will be able to further their sustainability efforts with a grant from the IDNR. Central Market’s Food Pulper has been through numerous repairs over the last year, and is close to breaking down, but the IDNR has given Central a $20,000 grant to purchase a new pulper in its place. The pulper processes food, then extracts and filters the water for use as rinse water. The remaining pulp goes to a composting facility. The college hopes to purchase two dehydrators in the future, which would allow the pulp to be ground into a sawdust and used as fertilizer on Central’s athletic fields.
