Comprised solely of Class 1A schools, the Bluegrass Conference track teams all have practically the same handicap when it comes to the number of athletes out for the sport. Athletic Director and head coach for the Melcher-Dallas girls’ track and field team, Jim Crozier, said that the numbers’ game is tough, but his squad has done a tremendous job of fighting adversity.
“Girls track in the Bluegrass Conference is usually…most of the teams, other than Lamoni and Twin Cedars who usually have quite a few out, the rest of them sometimes are under ten, but most of them are averaging about 10 – 12 athletes out,” Crozier said. “The number game is hard to fight, and we’ve done fairly well in the past few years even with the numbers that we have of finishing at least in the top half and most of the time in the top three in the conference track meet.”
Crozier said he expects around 12-15 kids out for track this year. His team will open up the season with a meet on April 2 at Nodaway Valley.
