We can finally say that warmer weather has impeccable timing, as things seem to be warming up just in time to heat up the action on the Blue Oval at Drake Stadium for the Drake Relays. The Relays are in their 104th year, and our area schools qualified a combined 18 events. For Pella, their boys will be competing in seven different events: Chris Brogden in the 100, Wade Pingel will race in the 800, and the 4 x 100, 200, 400 and 800 meter relay teams also will be featured. Just announced yesterday, Garrett Jansen will be competing in the discus due to an injury to one of the qualifiers. Pingel says to succeed this year, his teammates will need to be in the right state of mind. Evan Jones says his motivation is the “last hurrah” factor. The Lady Dutch will also be at Drake Stadium competing, as Dak Rasmussen’s gals qualified four events for this year’s Relays. Jessica Holterhaus will be in the long jump, the 4 x 100 and 400 relay teams also made it, as well as the sprint medley relay squad. Pella Christian’s lone entry is Madison Fopma in the high jump, and PCM’s girls’ track team will compete in the 4 x 100 meter relay.
