Marion County employees that participate in single plan health insurance will soon start contributing to their benefits. The Board of Supervisors approved Tuesday to have those employees pay 5 percent of their plan’s total cost.
Supervisor Mark Raymie explains that it spreads the risk across their entire platform of employees, noting that families have recently picked up the bulk of rate increases. He says in order for the county to have a viable plan in the future, everyone needs to pay. Employees will begin this contribution on July 1st; sheriff’s department employees under a union contract that are impacted will not begin the 5 percent payment until next summer, when their union contract expires.
Raymie says that the county will still be very competitive with benefit plans. Family plan participants in Marion County pay around 24 percent of total costs.
