A chase occurred between police officers and a Pella man at approximately 2:00 am Sunday morning. A police officer attempted to pull over Derek James Starkey, 22, of Pella, after witnessing a traffic violation, but then Starkey allegedly accelerated away quickly. According to the Pella Police Chief Robert Bokinsky, Starkey took an indirect route to 163 east toward Oskaloosa before doubling back towards Pella. Officers briefly lost the man before connecting with him again at Sunrise Trailer Park where he was placed under arrest. Starkey was charged with OWI 2nd, which is an aggravated misdemeanor, eluding a law enforcement vehicle, which is a class D felony, and reckless driving which is a simple misdemeanor. Marion County Sheriff’s Office was also involved. At times Starkey was observed going over 25mph over the speed limit.
