Fans gathered outside the Maytag Student Center yesterday at high noon to send the Central College softball team off in style as the Dutch hit the road to Eau Claire, Wisconsin for the 2013 NCAA Division III Softball Championships. Central swept through the Pella Regional last weekend to earn its 13th all-time appearance at the national finals, but its first since the 2003 title club. Senior right fielder Emily TeBrink says that she came to Central for softball, and softball alone, and this trip is a culmination of a dream come true.
“We’re all excited for the games and we’re all excited for the extra time we get to spend with each other, for the team cohesiveness we’re going to have, team activities and team dinners. I’m just excited to spend this time with the team, because we’ve spent this entire season together – what better time to finish it off at the National”.
While the tournament doesn’t start until tomorrow, it’s a busy day today for the Dutch. They’ll do a team service project this morning playing kickball with special needs students, then they’ll attend a BBQ lunch put on by the NCAA. The afternoon brings the team’s lone practice on the game field, and the annual NCAA banquet will be held tonight. When the action starts tomorrow, Central plays the final first round game against Montclair State of New Jersey. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and we’ll have live coverage on 92.1 FM KRLS and www.kniakrls.com.
