Marion County’s General Assistance program has tightened the income guidelines for those who are eligible for assistance. The Board of Supervisors recently approved Director Mike Kuhn’s request to make decrease the income that makes a person eligible for assistance from 150 percent to 125 percent of the federal poverty level. Kuhn says this will mean that the income cap will be around 1196 dollars per month – without the change, the cap was set to jump 1436 dollars per month. He explains the change still reaches the upper levels of those in need, while also putting the county in line with similar surrounding counties.
Last year, the amount of months per year an individual or family was eligible for assistance decreased from three to two; Kuhn says that change has helped him stay within his budget without having to ask for a budget amendment.
