An opportunity to run at Drake Stadium awaits the Knoxville Track and Field Squads as tonight the Panthers travel to Winterset for one of eight State Qualifying Meets. For the boys, it would not be out of the realm of possibility for the Panthers to qualify for state in all 18 events. Knoxville is in the top five in every event and leads or would be the top seed in nine of the events. With that possibility to completely dominate the team standings and bring back another banner to hang in the gym, which would be six of the last eight years, Coach Mike Cunningham 2nd says the emphasis is getting as many events qualified rather than going for the team title. While C2 is not discounting the team title by any stretch, he adds if you cannot place in very many events, you will not have to worry about the team title. Meanwhile, the girls after having a night in Pella that they improved their times, the Panthers find themselves in the top five in eight of the events. Coach Jeremy Van Engen was pleased to be sent to a meet that does not have the likes of Pella and Oskaloosa, who his girls have had to contend with all season. Van Engen adds schools like A-D-M, Dallas Center-Grimes, Perry, and Winterset have not seem his girls run this season, so it may be an advantage that those teams may not be as aware of Knoxville. Weather permitting, the Winterset State Qualifying Meet is scheduled to begin at four, if it is called off, the makeup date is tomorrow.
