One goal was all the Pella High boys’ soccer team needed to advance in the opening round of the 2013 Class 2A state soccer tournament, as they defeated Norwalk 1 – 0 on Thursday afternoon. Each team was getting the field for the slick field conditions during the opening parts of the first half, and they both had equal scoring opportunities in the first forty minutes. Austin Van Genderen ended up with a breakaway and put a little dribbler past the goalie to tally the one and only goal of the contest. The Little Dutch’s defense hung on in the second half despite an increased attack and intensity from Norwalk. Coach Mark Solomon said after the game that his team was better prepared to face the Warriors this time around. Cedar Rapids-Xavier beat defending champs Dubuque Wahlert 3 – 2, so Pella will be facing them in the semifinals this afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Listen to 92.1 KRLS throughout the day for live updates from the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines.
