A big highlight of the 2012 Central men’s soccer season was their run through the Iowa Conference tournament late in the year. They were picked to finish fifth in the conference, and though they finished below that in sixth place, the Dutch came to play in the league tournament in late October-early November. Their run to the finals was not paved very smoothly; the Central men first had to beat Luther in a shootout to advance to play second-seeded Dubuque, who they handled in double overtime, 2 – 1. It was the first trip to a conference tournament finals in school history for men’s soccer, and though they fell just short to Loras, 2 – 1, head coach Garry Laidlaw says that their deep run meant a lot to the players who perhaps set the bar a little higher for themselves and for the team. Central finished 2013 with an 8 – 10 – 3 overall record, and will begin their fall season with a game on August 30 in St. Louis, Missouri against Washington.
