With the “grading period” for district and region rankings rapidly approaching, Pella will host Newton tonight with a chance for the Dutch baseball and softball teams to gain more than just a win for their record. Newton is Class 4A, and a win for the Pella baseball club would give them four points towards their district ranking score used to determine seeding for the postseason tournament. The Cardinals are 6 – 8 overall entering Monday and 2 – 2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Coach Jesse Jablonski says that regardless of who they are playing, they have to be ready to compete at a high level. He tells KNIA/KRLS Sports that what one team has done in the past, may not be exactly what you see out of the same team the night you play them. Jablonski also said that everyone is still in the hunt for the conference title, and Newton has a couple of big wins on their side of things already this year. Pella enters play at 3 – 9. On the softball side, Pella’s loss to Norwalk on Friday drops them to 2 – 2 in the conference, and with the way the Warriors and Oskaloosa are playing, the Lady Dutch will need to keep winning the conference games to stay in the hunt for a league title. You can hear the play-by-play of the baseball game between the Little Dutch and Cardinals live on 92.1 KRLS and streamed live at kniakrls.com this evening with Cory Houser and Marcus Johnson calling every pitch. Pregame starts at 7:15 p.m.
