Patience was a virtue for the Pella High baseball team in the seventh inning; scoring eight runs to blow open an otherwise close game, 10 – 0 on Wednesday night. Jacob Gleason was dealing on the mound, pitching with the lead after a second inning, two-out RBI single from Matt Nieuwsma. The score would remain that way until the sixth inning. That Grant Judkins home run made it 2 – 0 Pella and helped Gleason settle in. The Pella pitcher allowed just one hit in six-plus innings of work, striking out 11 and walking just four to get the win. Coach Jesse Jablonski said that his senior hurler knows when to be clutch. The one hit on the night for the Eagles came from Dillon Branderhorst. Eagles’ starting pitcher, Josh Van Gorp was tagged with the loss, though he pitched six strong innings, striking out three and allowing just two runs. Eagles’ coach, Nate Johnson said that Van Gorp had a tough match-up going against Gleason, but he did his best to keep them in the game. Pella baseball improves to 8 – 12 on the season with a 5 – 6 conference record, and Pella Christian drops to 3 – 7 in the conference with an overall mark of 8 – 11. Pella hosts Saydel tonight for a game, and Pella Christian will hope to host Oskaloosa for a doubleheader this evening as well.
