Faltering on Saturday in their tournament, the PCM softball team turned things around with two dominating victories over Heart of Iowa conference rival Gilbert, and the Mustangs’ baseball did the same thing in their single contest with the same opponent. PCM pounded out the hits in game one, winning 20 – 7. Kaitlyn Wilkie was 3-for-5 at the plate and Jennafer Uitermarkt also had three hits but drove in six runs. The runs were harder to come by in the nightcap, but the Mustangs still held on to win 3 – 1. Payge Edwards drove in two, Kelsey Townsend had the third, and Kayla Jennings got the win on the mound by striking out six. In the baseball contest, the Mustangs got four runs in the middle innings, which were just enough to stave off a late rally by Gilbert, 4 – 3. Ethan Kain was 1-for-2 with a two-run double, and Zach Uhlenhopp had a pair of hits for the Mustangs. Alex DeWitte earned the win on the mound, pitching the complete game, walking nobody and striking out six. He had a shutout going into the seventh, but allowed a solo home-run, then a two-run blast before getting the last two men out to preserve the victory. PCM baseball is 9 – 7, softball is 11 – 10, and they’ll each host Greene County on Wednesday.
