The Knoxville City Council approved agreements last week that allow officers from Carlisle and Pella to serve in Knoxville during RAGBRAI. With the agreement in place, the City of Knoxville will pay officers from those communities to provide the extra security, while Carlisle and Pella will provide much of the liability and additional benefits.
Police Chief Dan Losada says they’re estimating 30 extra officers will be needed for 12 hour shifts that day. Those officers will be paid $30/hour, creating an additional cost of $10,800 for law enforcement and security alone. Assistant City Manager Dylan Feik explains these are among the many costs that were part of their RAGBRAI budgets. He says that alcohol sales and vendor fees will recoup part of the cost, while the RAGBRAI organization also provides some funds.
