It’s ‘On To State’ for Twin Cedars’ Baseball

Twin Cedars jumped on North Mahaska early, Otis Roby pitched a perfect two-and-two-thirds of an inning in relief of Coy Moore, and it will be the Sabers moving on to Des Moines after their 5 – 2 win last night over the Warhawks in the Class 1A Substate 5 final. Moore, Roby and Hunter Embray all singled to begin the ballgame in the first, but opposing pitcher, Trent Roose, limited the Sabers to just one run. Twin Cedars capitalized on a couple of Warhawk errors in the second to score two more, and then tacked on their fourth run in the fifth. Coy Moore was sharp for the most part through four-and-a-third; walking four batters, striking out six, and not allowing a hit until the fifth inning. North Mahaska threatened with the bases loaded in that frame, but Otis Roby came in and shut the door, only allowing a sacrifice fly, and striking out six straight to close the ballgame out for his team. Coach Matt Miller said the fast start was nice, but they should have capitalized more on their opportunities. Twin Cedars’ win sends them to the Class 1A state tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines later this week with a record of 35 – 2. This will be the Sabers’ first trip to state since 2003, when they played Martensdale – St. Mary’s in the first round, and wouldn’t you know it, that’s who they’re paired up against in round one in 2013. The two schools will face-off Friday night with first pitch scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
