With the large number of bicyclists coming in as part of RAGBRAI, safety in sharing the road should be on the forefront of motorists’ minds. Marion County Sheriff Jason Sandholdt says motorists need to slow down as they approach a cyclist from behind. He explains many motorists think they’re slowing down, but it’s not as slow as they should be going. He adds drivers should also take every chance to move as far from the right side of the road as possible when passing bikes. Many cyclists feel nervous when being passed because vehicles don’t give them much room.
As for cyclists themselves, Sandholdt reminds riders to ride right. Drifting over into the middle of the lane can make it more dangerous for motorists trying to pass a bike. He also reminds cyclists to wear bright, visible clothing so they can be spotted well ahead of time.
