Dan Van Kooten, a teacher and counselor at Pella Christian High School has seen thousands of students succeed, and some fail. He says that there is no recipe for success, and that every student is different, but there are some important tips to share.
Students need to learn how to manage and use their time well, as students have many competing interests.
Allocate time for every activity, including down time.
Get organized. Know where everything is. Organize in binders, folders, or electronically. Just organize.
Prioritize. Work should come first. Successful adults finish their work before they play, successful students need to do the same thing.
Sometimes let kids play video games for long periods. They’ll eventually get too much of them, and move on to other more productive activities.
Lean to collaborate, and learn collaboratively. This ability is important in the modern workplace.
Parents need to tell children what their expectations are, and need to hold them to them.
