Two doubleheader sweeps over Oskaloosa and Knoxville encapsulated the season for Coach Nate Johnson of the Pella Christian baseball team in 2013. The two wins over the Indians stand out to the Eagles’ skipper, because of the caliber of their opponent. He knew Oskaloosa had a good conference record coming into play of that contest, and his team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the first game of the twinbilling en route to sweeping the Indians. Johnson also said that the doubleheader against the Panthers was back-and-forth and one game went to extras, but his guys stayed tough and won both of those, too. In addition to those four big wins, Coach Johnson throws in another big win over one of the larger schools in the Little Hawkeye Conference.
“Those are two games that really stood out, I think the other one would be the Newton game,” Johnson said. “A very good team, away at their place. Things didn’t look good, but we just kept battling, kept fighting and took the lead and ended up winning against a good 4A school, and those are the types of games that I’ll remember [from this last season].”
Pella Christian won that game 8 – 6, and won the season series against the Cardinals, the Indians, and the Panthers.
