For an unprecedented 13th consecutive year, the Central volleyball team has received the American Volleyball Coaches Association, or AVCA, Team Academic Award. To receive the award, a team must have a combined GPA of the previous year of at least 3.30. The Dutch’s cumulative grade point average was 3.418 for 2012-13, allowing them to receive the award for a 14th time and 13th in a row, the most by any college. Central also had eight volleyball players earn academic all-conference honors in fall of 2012, which requires at least a GPA of 3.50. Those receiving that distinction include Liz Ihnen, Keeley Orvis, Jessica Laflin, Kari Sandage, Sara Snead, Claire Stewart, Emily Huegel and Sam Retz. Central was one of 13 Iowa schools to get the AVCA Team Academic Award, and one of five Iowa Conference schools, with the others being Coe, Dubuque, Simpson and Wartburg.
