Residents Asked to Watch for Buckling Roads During Heat Wave

Extreme heat like that we’re experiencing this week brings plenty of concerns with it. At the Marion County Secondary Road’s Department, they’re on the lookout for buckling roads. County Engineer Roger Schletzbaum explains that road material expands as it gets warmer. Each road has small saw cuts that give the pavement room to expand. When it’s as hot as it is this week, that material can expand past the point that those gaps can handle. Scheltzbaum says that the pressure at that point causes the roads to buckle. He adds that if you see any buckled roads, you should call the Engineer’s Office at 828-2225. Their goal is to address the issues as quickly as possible when they come up.
