A new sign greets visitors at Knoxville City Hall. The wooden blue sign was returned to the City after a few decades. City Manager Harold Stewart explains that the sign was apparently a parting gift from the City of Knoxville to the first 3M Plant Manager in Knoxville. Stewart says that he got a call from the man’s family in February. He had recently passed away, and his daughter wanted to know if the City was interested in having the sign back. Stewart says the man had hung the sign in his basement for the past 30 years. The City eventually received the sign in July before hanging it. Stewart adds that he’s made contact with people who knew the lady that painted the sign. He’s hoping to use that information and information from the family of the plant manager to create a plaque detailing the sign’s history.
