The Knoxville City Council heard from Knoxville Veteran Alliance Managing Member James Washington during their regular meeting last night. Washington urged the Council to pursue taking over the Enhance Use Lease from the KVA. He said he believes that the VA and KVA are at the point where they would be able to be leveraged, and the City could possibly own the campus in a short period of time.
Washington added that they have several entities that could move forward with plans at the Campus if a major entity like the City were to step in and take over the lease. He noted the City would also be in a position to offer major tax incentives.
City Manager Harold Stewart told the Council they’d have to consider the length of time it may take to deconstruct a building since the VA Campus is on the Historical Registry. Some investors have expressed interest in such a plan on the campus. The Council also wanted to ensure that Washington’s partner, Aubrey Wilson, was on-board with this idea. The City Council will likely consider the matter further during a special session Thursday.
