Much like last year, perennial powerhouse St. Albert – Council Bluffs took it to Pella Christian’s football team last night, winning 35 – 7 in the first round of the Class 1A district playoffs. Senior running back, Jacob Bendgen carried the team on his back, scoring three first half touchdowns of four, 60 and 61 yards while the passing game for both sides was non-existent. The Eagles could only muster nine total yards of offense in the first half while only completing one first down. To make matters worse, the Falcons’ Ryan Hansen took the opening kick-off of the second half back 93 yards to the house to dash any hopes of a Pella Christian comeback. Bendgen also added a 54 yard run to cap the Falcons’ scoring. Coach Darryl DeRuiter said after the game that Bendgen is just plain quick. Mason Howerzyl did get a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter and finished his high school football career with 122 yards on the ground in last night’s contest, and his counterpart, Bendgen, had a whopping 238 yards rushing. Pella Christian finishes their season with a 4 – 6 record.
