Blocked Field Goal Fuels Central Late Surge

Central’s football team took the lead late and used a huge special teams stop and score to punctuate a 23 – 13 win over Buena Vista on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers started by taking the opening drive of the game 48 yards to the house to make it 7 – 0 before tacking on another field goal to go up 10 – 0. Central’s defense started to bear down in the second quarter and came up with a big interception that was returned to the five-yard line. Two plays later, Aaron Eiseler found Grant McArdle in the end zone to make it 10 – 6. The Beavers would tack on a field goal to start the second half to go up 13 – 6, and that would be all the Dutch defense would allow. Following a Kevin Sheldon field goal, Central marched 80 yards down the field to begin the fourth quarter, capped off by a Blaine Forsythe diving catch in the end zone to give Central their first lead of the game. Buena Vista had one last chance to tie or take the lead, and had six chances from a “goal-to-go” situation to punch it in, but Central’s defense did not let up. The Beavers had to settle for a field goal attempt, but Eric Larson got a piece of the ball, which Mike Young picked up and scrambled 85 yards the other way to put their opponents away for good. The stats told a different story; Buena Vista outgained Central 397 – 212, but Central forced two turnovers and converted 10-of-16 third downs to keep drive alive in the second half. Central improves to 1 – 2 in the Iowa Conference and 3 – 3 overall. Next week, Central will host Luther to continue their league schedule.
