Pella Christian’s defense limited Mount Ayr’s production in the first half, but in the end, the Raiders proved to be too powerful, in a 35 – 7 win in Week Nine of the 2013 high school football season. In what turned out to be one of the most bazaar ways to begin a football game, both Mount Ayr and Pella Christian blocked the other team’s punt and returned it for a touchdown to make it 7 – 7. The Raiders would get a touchdown run by Cody Stackhouse to begin the second quarter, to take a 14 – 7 lead into the locker rooms. The Eagles had held the Raiders to under 100 yards rushing in the first half, but could not find an answer to Mount Ayr’s ground attack in the final 24 minutes. The Raiders ended up with 292 yards rushing, with over 200 of them coming in the second half. The Eagles had several opportunities to score, especially in the first half, but penalties and fumbles stopped any kind of momentum the Eagles would find, says Coach Darryl DeRuiter. The Eagles finish the regular season 4 – 5 and 2 – 4 in Class 1A District 7. Thanks to losses by both Des Moines Christian and Central Decatur, Pella Christian receives the four seed and will go on the road to play St. Albert – Council Bluffs this Wednesday in the first round of the postseason.
