Catie Brand, head coach of Pella High volleyball, said it was a “great day” for her Lady Dutch on the volleyball courts. Her girls finished second in the Newton tournament to Harlan and went 3 – 2 on the day. The Lady Dutch started by toppling Carlisle 21 – 18 and 21 – 19 thanks to a nearly 33% kill efficiency led by Shannon Ewing with nine. Knoxville beat Pella in game one of their second match, but Pella rallied to win in three, 11 – 21, 21 – 8 and 15 – 11. Harlan halted Ewing in the third game, not allowing her a single kill in a two game sweep, 11 – 21 and 17 – 21. In a preview of a possible conference championship game, Pella and host Newton went to three, but it was the Lady Dutch who finished on top, 25 – 18, 21 – 25 and 15 – 6. Makenna Bogaard had four aces and Taelor Rempe had 18 digs for Pella to lead the way. Pella and Harlan would meet in the championship game, with the Lady Dutch falling 15 – 25 and 8 – 25. Pella’s girls improve to 15 – 12 on the season, and they will host Knoxville on Tuesday, looking to move to 5 – 0 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.
