The Pella volleyball team lost their first Little Hawkeye Conference game, but it didn’t stop them from winning the match over Pella Christian, three sets to one. Pella cruised in games one and two, 25 – 20 and 25 – 15. However, in game three, the Eagles got off to a quick start, and despite an injury to Hannah Beltman, held on to win 25 – 23. Game four was close as well, but it was the Lady Dutch who pulled away in the closing moments 25 – 23 to win the match. Eagles’ coach, Cindy Nikkel gave all the credit after the match to Pella showing up and playing effective volleyball. Pella’s service was a little stronger in the beginning, says Coach Catie Brand, which helped them win the first pair of sets. Pella’s win coupled with Newton’s loss to Dallas Center-Grimes leaves the Lady Dutch all alone in first place in the Little Hawkeye Conference with a record of 4 – 0 and a 12 – 10 mark overall. The loss drops Pella Christian to 12 – 13 on the season and 1 – 3 in the conference. Pella heads to Newton for a tournament this Saturday, while the Eagles are off until Tuesday to play Norwalk.
