Central College jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead and held on to beat Coe 21-7 in the 2013 football season finale Saturday. The Dutch scored twice in the first eight minutes on a Josh Osborn 25-yard run and a 20-yard pass from Aaron Eisler to Brendon Boerm. While the Kohawks struggled all day to muster much offense against Central’s league-leading “D”, Coe’s defense got them back in the ballgame with a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the second quarter. That 14-7 score held until there were just over three minutes left in the game when the Dutch took advantage of a short field after a fourth down stop, and Eisler hit Osborn on a 4-yard scoring toss. Osborn finished with 199 yards rushing and the two touchdowns as the Dutch racked up 345 yards of total offense and controlled the ball for nearly 39 minutes. Central’s defense limited Coe to only 144 total yards, which is just over a third of their season average. Central finishes the 2013 season with a 6-4 overall record, and the Dutch tied for third in the Iowa Conference standings with Coe and Dubuque at 4-3. Wartburg ended up winning the league crown and the automatic berth in the Division III playoffs, while Simpson finished second.
