Washington proved to be too powerful in the second half, as the Demons defeated Pella High, 28 – 0 in the Class 3A State Football Quarterfinals last night. Pella had a few prime opportunities to put points on the board first in the opening minutes; their first play from scrimmage was a halfback pass from Austin Schulte that sailed too far for a wide open Bryce Bortscheller. The Little Dutch drove down the field and had a first and goal from the five and couldn’t convert, and then had their field goal attempt blocked by the Demons. Alex Coker scored on a 35-yard reception to give Washington all of the cushion they would need, and Pella’s hopes were further hindered when on the second-to-last play in the first half, Noah Clayberg would dislocate his elbow and would not return the rest of the game. Washington scored three times in the second half, and only allowed one Pella High first down the remainder of the game. After the game, Coach Jay McKinstrey mentioned how proud he was of every single player that came to play the last 12 contests wearing the “Pella Green.” Pella finished the season 11 – 1 and will lose a total of 16 seniors off of their 2013 squad.
