Central’s basketball squads had a very successful conclusion to their 2013 part of the schedule. The men were able to come away with a nine point win over Sacred Heart of Puerto Rico, 81 – 72 on Sunday. Dutch rebounding helped lead the way as they grabbed 20 offensive boards which led to 24 second-chance points. Matt Greenfield had a double-double at the half and finished the game with 22 points and 17 rebounds, while freshman Colby Taylor went 5-for-8 beyond the arc and tallied 16. Meanwhile, the women won a defensive battle over the Sacred Heart women, 47 – 33. It was the women’s best defensive effort of the season, as they held their opponents to less than 29% shooting. Kenzie Vander Molen again led the Dutch in scoring with 16 points. The men improve to 7 – 4 while the women are 8 – 3, and they each have some positive momentum heading into the Iowa Conference schedule which starts for them at home on January 8 against Luther.
