The Central women’s basketball team put their first bump in the road behind them easily while the men fell short of an upset in last night’s action. The Dutch men lost to Augustana, 79 – 57. Central kept it close for most of the first half, but the Vikings shot 53% from the field and nearly 61% in the second half to bury the Dutch in the end. Fred Pratt and Kevin Kaerwer each had 14 points to lead the way in scoring for Central. William Penn hung tough with Central’s women all night long, but the Dutch pulled away with clutch free throws to win 62 – 55. Though they were dominated on the boards, especially on the offensive end, the Dutch made up for it on the defensive end by holding the Lady Statesmen to 29% shooting for the game. Both Kenzie Vander Molen and Kaitlin Stump scored 18 points to lead the way. Coach Chelsea Petersen says they were each a force to be reckoned with last night. The Central men drop to 5 – 4 overall while the women improve to 7 – 1 with their first win over William Penn in 12 years. The men are off until the end of the month when they head to Puerto Rico and the women have one more test before their trip with the men; a game with Augustana this Saturday afternoon.
