Clear Snow From Fire Hydrants

IMG_3322 [1]

If you have a fire hydrant in your yard, the Knoxville Fire Department asks that you shovel the snow from around it, and clean the snow off the hydrant as best you can. Fire Chief Jim Mitchell says that if the hydrants are buried under snow and crews are called to a fire, they may have to drive further from the fire to find a working hydrant. Mitchell says that the warmer weather in the last few days, coupled with the freezing temperatures that are forecast also create problems, because when the melted snow freezes, it can block the hydrant, or freeze the top nut so it’s very difficult to remove.
