Changes are coming to the way your drivers’ license will be renewed. Effective January 1, Iowa licenses will be transitioning to an 8 year cycle. Denise Emal, Marion County Treasurer, says that the main reason behind the change is to stagger the renewals so the renewal volume is more evenly spread out. She says for the first few years, the renewal will be a random computer generated period for 5, 6, 7 or 8 years. She says the cost won’t change; a regular operators license is $4 per year. Non-driver IDs will not follow this stagger, they will start out at 8 years.
