The Pella Christian boys and girls split a home double header Friday night against the Newton Cardinals. In the first game, the girls were led by Hannah Beltman who had nine points and 14 rebounds. Unfortunately for the Eagles offense, only three other players scored in the 40-35 loss. The win was the first for Newton who improved to 1-5, while the loss dropped Pella Christian back to .500 at 4-4. In the second game, the boys got off to a hot start and they maintained a large lead heading into the fourth frame with a 59-50 advantage, but a late surge by Newton tied the game in the final two minutes. A late free throw by Sebastian Baugh gave him 18 points on the evening and the Eagles a 73-72 win as they held off a final attempt by the Cardinals to get the one point victory. The win improves Pella Christian to 4-2, while Newton falls to 2-2. The boys are off until Tuesday to take on Albia, while the girls have some time off when they head back to the western side of Iowa to face Unity Christian one week from today.
