Fans in attendance of last night’s Pella High basketball doubleheader were treated to a pair of very good games. The Lady Dutch fell to Ballard, 54 – 46. Twelve first quarter turnovers spelled disaster early on for Pella, as they were never able to recover from a 10 – 1 deficit. Jessica Holterhaus led all Pella scorers with 15 points, and Katie Vander Molen threw in nine. The Pella boys trailed for a majority of the game until a late surge and 22 fourth quarter points helped them escape with a 65 – 59 win. Coach Mark Core said after the game that the word “escape” was the epitome of last night’s game. Both teams had their starters get into foul trouble early on, which forced them each to shuffle kids around most of the contest. Isaac Naaktgeboren had 14 points, Bryce Bortscheller came up with 13, and Payson Vande Lune had ten to lead the way for Pella. The Lady Dutch fall to 3 – 1 with the loss, while the boys are now 3 – 0, and their week doesn’t get any easier when Dallas Center-Grimes comes to town for another doubleheader this Friday.
